In addition to the many custom metal awnings and metal canopies for homes we’ve built, we also build straight, curved, round, oval and commercial standing seam awnings and canopies. We use 50% recycled materials and our metal awnings and metal canopies shield your doors and windows from the sun’s heat and damaging UV rays and the ravages of winter weather. Our awnings can lower your utility bills in the hot and the cold months. In the winter metal awnings and metal canopies create heat traps which hold heat escaping from your doors and windows. In the summer, they shield your windows and doors from the direct sun and heat as well as protecting delicate wood work and finishes from damaging UV Rays, reducing the need for refinishing and extending the life of fine wood doors by decades.
In the past, one had to find a qualified artisan and have him come to your location to fabricate your custom metal awning or designer color awning. Not any more! Our quality metal awnings and metal canopies are custom built one a time to your specifications and delivered to you ready for installation by semi-skilled workers. We’ve accomplished this though our unique modular design method. Our metal awnings come to you in one piece, complete with flashings and mounting hardware, ready to fasten to the wall. Our metal door awnings are strong too. The Cypress Sweep metal entry awning to the right survived the fury of of the winds in the main path of Hurricane Ike at this home near Spring Texas.
Although our metal awnings come in an infinite number of sizes, there are several common types:
Square or rectangular awning: the sides turn back to the wall at 90 degree angles to the front.
Oval or bow awning: bows out in a graceful arc from the wall. One variation has the window projecting out 8-18 inches at 90 degrees then arcing.
Round awning: the awning is a full half circle.
Regardless of your metal awning or designer color awning type, the measurements you need are the depth (distance from the front of the metal awning back to the wall) length (from end to end where the awning meets the wall), and height. A word about height: often the height of the metal awning is merely a matter of personal taste, but other times there may be architectural obstacles to height, such as a second story window or balcony. Make sure you are aware of this and check to make sure you have sufficient room for it. Also if you have and sidelights you will want to take that into account. Most find they prefer the metal awning to extend just a bit beyond the casing on either side.
Design the Awning: Before you start anything, you need to decide what kind of door awning you want. You have many choices for size and shape. Rounded marquee awning, gable marquee awning, quarter round awning, bell awning, or traditional shed awning look great over doors. The look of the awning will be a subjective decision, entirely up to the style of your home and your tastes. You will also need to choose a metal and perhaps a color. You will also need to be aware of any changes you want to make to the stock item.
Take Accurate Measurements: You will need to have an idea of the size and the pitch of the door awning or window awning. The only way to get this is to get measurements of the window or door opening, the space available for the metal awning, the height, and the length of space available as well. Make sure you account for any protruding brick or stone or offsets in the facade whether brick, stone, stucco, or siding. If we know about the issues in advance we can usually work around them. It is best practice with very uneven stone facades to install a special flashing receiver prior to masonry work. Think of the metal door awning as a triangle, with the metal awning slope as the hypotenuse and the height of the window it covers as the drop. The taller the window and the steeper the structure’s roof angle, the longer the recommended drop. Measure the height of the window from the outside. Measure the width of the window from casing to casing. Write down both measurements for use when selecting your metal window awning.
